The Santa Barbara County Board of Supervisors unanimously voted yesterday to form an anti-Halloween committee with the eventual goal of ending the traditional Isla Vista celebration.

The imaginative vision and colossal funding normally reserved for a Disneyland ride have come together at the UCSB California NanoSystems Institute, resulting in a sphere-shaped, virtual reality collision of art and science. Researchers from the UCSB Media Arts and Technology initiative (MATi) demonstrated the Allosphere, a 360-degree interactive environment, in its unfinished form yesterday to a small group of students and faculty members.

When it comes to the subject of outsiders crossing the line, there is certainly no one more well-read than an Isla Vista resident. After all, nearly 80 percent of the arrests made over Halloween weekend were served to out-of-towners, and while I.V. has consistently endured these sometimes unwanted sometimes friendly visitors, it should not have to do the same for another group of people who have likewise overstepped their boundaries: The Santa Barbara County Board of Supervisors.

With the season winding down, the UCSB cross country team will head to Regionals on Saturday in hopes of wrapping up a bid to the National Championships. The #22 men's team is coming off a disappointing second place finish to Cal Poly at the Big West Championships, but this weekend's race will provide the Gauchos with another shot at their rivals from up north. UCSB's average time at Big West was actually a second and a half faster than Cal Poly's average, but, because of the scoring system, the Gauchos came up short in their quest for their first conference title since 2001.

The UCSB women's club field hockey team battled it out against UC Irvine and Claremont McKenna this weekend while the majority of Gauchos lay sound asleep recovering from Halloween and midterms.
