As campus groups continue their campaign efforts, county officials are expecting a high voter turnout for tomorrow's election - one that could give Democrats the first majority in Congress since 1994.

Pledging to continue their crusade for the evicted tenants of the Cedarwood Apartments and for an increase in university service workers' wages, Tent City protesters packed up their possessions Friday, ending their 16-day campout in front of Storke Tower. The activists said the university placed pressure on them to leave the premises, despite the fact that neither issue was resolved to their satisfaction: The Cedarwood tenants settled with the property's new owner in court last week on what supporters said were unfair terms, while UCSB service workers have yet to receive a wage increase they claim they are owed.

Any guy can tell you that foreign girls are mind-numbingly attractive. Whether they're actually hot, which most that I've met seem to be, or even if they're not, there's something about their presence that makes it impossible to ignore them. And I don't know if this trait is common among all men, but I totally have a sixth sense that allows me to pick up on their tantalizing accents from a great distance. When I finally get the nerve to go introduce myself, I get that feeling inside that Tom Hanks had in Big" when he busted out his moves on that life-size piano. You know, that kid-with-the-cookie-jar, I.V.-alcoholic-with-his-Taaka feeling.

As a feminist and active member of the anti-rape movement, I am writing to urge you to vote no on Proposition 83 - Jessica's Law - on the Nov. 7 ballot. Since September, the governor has signed two bills, SB 1128 and SB 1178, that require GPS tracking for high-risk sex offenders and increase penalties for others. These new laws cover 80 percent of the components that make up Proposition 83. The rest of the proposition includes prohibiting registered sex offenders from living within 2000 feet of a school or park and enforcing lifetime GPS tracking for all registered sex offenders.

I have to respond to a column written by Harry Nelson ("Measure D Will Not Get Funding for I.V. Projects," Daily Nexus, Nov. 2, 2006). Measure D is one of the most important issues on the ballot this Tuesday. We have an opportunity to impact our transportation options for the next 30 years.

Sometimes ignorance is bliss. However, in C.K. Hickey's case, he needs to get his story straight. Hickey wrote the column, "Explore California's Northern Cities," (Daily Nexus, Nov. 2).

What do single parents, the gay community, proponents of first amendment rights and supporters of Planned Parenthood all have in common? The answer is that each group, at one time or another, has served as an unwarranted target for the Christian Coalition.

UCSB men's soccer Head Coach Tim Vom Steeg and his squad probably never thought they'd be saying thanks to Cal State Northridge - at least not without some severe sarcasm behind it - but on Saturday the Matadors earned it. In its league finale and without hope of surpassing either one of the top two finishers, Northridge upset first-place Irvine and opened the door for the Gauchos (12-7-0 overall, 7-3-0 in the Big West) to walk on through to a league championship. And this time around, UCSB made no mistake in finishing off the deed in the form of a 4-0beat down of a visiting Riverside (5-12-2 overall, 2-6-2 Big West) squad Saturday night.

The UCSB women's basketball team jumped out to a big early lead and cruised to an easy 76-47 victory over Cal Poly Pomona in its only exhibition game before the season opener. The Gauchos led 13-2 after only three minutes of action and with strong defensive play leading the way, UCSB eventually jumped out to a 25-2 lead. Santa Barbara went into halftime leading by 30 points, and at one point in the second half extended the lead to 47. With a new starting lineup, the Gauchos showed that defensive intensity and rebounding will be keys to success this season.

After Friday's frustrating loss to Arizona in Tucson, the UCSB men's swimming team swam laps around the inferior Division II UC San Diego squad on Saturday, routing the Tritons 172-84 thanks in large part to senior Pat Cary's three individual event wins. Santa Barbara's women also showcased their Division I superiority, grabbing a 142-112 victory against the Tritons in UCSB's first home meet of the season.
