Movie buffs will delve into some reel and pressing queer issues this week; that is if they come out for the OUTrageous Film Festival. The 15th Annual Santa Barbara Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender Film Festival, which runs from Nov. 2 to 5, includes award-winning gay and lesbian movies, a panel discussion on methamphetamine use in the queer community and a reception featuring the directors and stars of several of the films shown. As part of the week's kickoff, a free showing of the documentary, "Fabulous! The Story of Queer Cinema," premiers tonight at 8 in the UCSB MultiCultural Center.

The Associated Student Legislative Council held a busy meeting last night, discussing three bills and two resolutions, allocating money, approving appointments and accepting the resignation of yet another member. Leggies passed a resolution supporting better campus lighting, but tabled a controversial resolution supporting the recent protests in Oaxaca. As for the bills, the council failed to pass a bill to expedite meetings, tabled a bill concerning the A.S. Isla Vista Tenants' Union, but passed a bill calling for the Bhakti Yoga Club to be recognized as a nonprofit organization, allowing them to continue serving lunches to its members on campus - an activity recently banned by the Office of Student Life.

Politics, Freebirds and dancing typically don't enter spheres of influence, but tonight the unlikely tripod will encourage smarter, savvier and less apathetic voters to perform their civic duty.

Eureka and Crescent City belong in Humboldt and Del Norte Counties, respectively, the northernmost two coastal counties in California. I used to look at them on the road atlas during family vacations up to Oregon, and I would wonder what it was like to live in a beach town over 100 miles away from the nearest big city. What did this place look like? What type of people lived there? Why has my family not visited this part of the state before?

There is an important local issue on the ballot in the Nov. 7 election, called Measure D. This measure would change the amount of sales tax you pay for local transportation from the existing one-half cent per dollar to three-fourths cent per dollar, starting in 2010.

During last week's Associated Students Legislative Council meeting, a bill was introduced to the floor to decrease the amount of time spent revising grammatical errors in bills on the grounds that the "knowledge of correct spelling and sentence structure has historically been inaccessible to low-income communities and communities of color."

I would like to comment on the opinion piece by Caroline Wolf ("Finding Fall Fashion for Isla Vista Weather," Daily Nexus, Oct. 26, 2006.) Contrary to her obviously misinformed opinion, leggings are not and will never be considered something "fashionable.

A.S. Finance Board's recent decision to squander every penny it had allocated for use during both Winter and Spring Quarters of this year really proves that the Students' Initiative is a useless waste of students' precious paychecks.

If Wednesday night's exhibition game was any indication, the future is bright for the UCSB men's basketball team. The Gauchos stormed out to a big first half lead and withheld a late run from UC San Diego to win 62-51. Santa Barbara jumped out to an early 20-6 lead and after a brief Triton comeback, the Gauchos finished the first half on a 14-2 run to take a 19 point lead into halftime. The game appeared to be well in hand at the start of the second half, but a stretch of Gaucho turnovers allowed UCSD to cut the deficit to six points with 5:32 remaining. That was as close as the Tritons would get, as strong defense and scoring from freshman guard James Powell would put the game away for good.

In a game fraught with disorder, Santa Barbara fell to the #18 Anteaters 2-0 on a cold Wednesday evening in Irvine. While a win would have clinched a Big West Conference Championship, the loss gives the Anteaters (13-3-3 overall, 6-2-1 in the Big West) a one-point edge over the Gauchos (11-7-0, 6-3-0 Big West) with only a game left to play.

A handful of local musicians are attempting to have their names etched onto the roster of American jazz innovators by joining in the long tradition of improvisational musical dialogue. These Isla Vista and Goleta residents actively participate in a biweekly sonic experiment, which is slated to take place on the first and third Thursday of every month at the BIKO House - located at 6612 Sueno Rd. - from 8 to 10 p.m. During their gatherings, they intend to build a living-art space in which experimental music genres can spontaneously grow and evolve. I witnessed one such event at their inaugural meeting on Thursday, Oct. 19.

If your Halloween weekend didn't include as many sexual exploits as you would have liked; if "Brokeback Mountain" left you yearning for more; if you're "curious," or just in the mood for some unconventional entertainment, the solution is closer than you think. "OUTrageous," the 15th annual Santa Barbara Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender Film Festival, returns Nov. 2-5 to satisfy, educate and entertain audiences with award-winning gay and lesbian films, panel discussions and even a reception featuring honored directors, actors and producers. Artsweek sat down with spokesperson Mashey Bernstein, the festival's longest standing member, to get the behind-the-scenes story.

Sometimes, it feels like directors are stuffing us with so much realism we're likely to choke on it. However, director Henry Selick's "The Nightmare Before Christmas," which was recently re-released in 3-D after its initial run 13 years ago, proves that, sometimes, a little fantasy can be... well, fantastic.

From the name, you would think that the Lyon Opera Ballet is a traditional French dance company. But last Tuesday night, the troupe demonstrated why they are billed as contemporary dance. Departing from everything classical, the Lyon Opera Ballet, under the direction of Yorgos Loukos, showcased a myriad of progressive elements exploring the furthest reaches of dance.

Judging by his work, Haruki Murakami bears ambivalence toward a great many things - his homeland, the literary establishment, his generation, the stability of identity and the conventions of narrative structure - to name just a few. Even if he doesn't actually feel that way on a personal level, you'd be hard pressed not to get the impression, especially after reading a career-spanning short story collection like Blind Willow, Sleeping Woman.
