Tent City Rally Marches on Cheadle

Thursday, October 26, 2006

The Tent City Jam Fest protestors marched and members of the greek system and community partied alongside them yesterday to show support for the Cedarwood eviction case and UC service workers. The group marched on Cheadle Hall for the second time within two weeks this afternoon in order to keep tabs on the administration's response to their demands: increased pay for service workers and support of a Just Cause Eviction Ordinance in Santa Barbara County.

I.V. Foot Patrol Prepares for Holiday

Thursday, October 26, 2006

Over 200 officers are joining the herd of out-of-towners descending on Isla Vista this weekend to celebrate Halloween. Isla Vista Foot Patrol Lt. Sol Linver said he does not think this year's celebration will be as big as last year, but the IVFP is preparing for the worst regardless.

Halloween Permits To Protect I.V. Cars

Thursday, October 26, 2006

Parking will be a true nightmare this Halloween as tow trucks prowl the streets of Isla Vista and a number of Goleta parking lots are looking for prey.

Halloween Midterms Spoil the Mood

Thursday, October 26, 2006

In every class it seems like I'm hearing the same thing. Halloween? What is that? Oh well, we'll give you a midterm on Nov. 1 anyway. You know, why not throw in a research paper on the Hawley-Smoot Tariff Act due that day, too. While you're at it, here's a 500-page book on Banobos you need to finish ASAP.

Finding Fall Fashion for Isla Vista Weather

Thursday, October 26, 2006

While the weather stays in our favor, fall runways cater to customers in need of heavy jackets, leaving Southern Californians to fend for themselves in the fashion world.

Golden State Blues: City Gimmicks Become All the Rage in California

Thursday, October 26, 2006

Pismo Beach is living a lie. Did you see those commercials on late-night TV last Friday about their 60th annual Clam Festival? The one with a chowder taste-off? A parade celebrating the clam? A walking, talking clam mascot? Oh snap! My weekend is set.

Third District Supervisor Gives Some I.V. Halloween Advice

Thursday, October 26, 2006

Isla Vista is a great place for students to unwind and have fun after a strenuous week of academics. As midterms approach, I'm sure that most of you are looking forward to the Halloween weekend. As your County Supervisor, I hope Halloween is an enjoyable holiday. It is also my obligation to try and keep Isla Vista a safe environment. I would like to highlight a few areas that are often overlooked while everyone eagerly awaits the weekend.

Bathroom Reading Material: Why T.O. Should Retire

Thursday, October 26, 2006

During Monday's pre-game coverage of the Giants-Cowboys game on ESPN, the majority of the time was spent talking about two players who are about as different as professional football players can be. On one side there was Terrell Owens, the motor-mouthed, pill popping, coach-berating Cowboys wide receiver.

Gauchos Head to Challenge Familiar Face

Thursday, October 26, 2006

The UCSB swim team heads to Hawaii this weekend to face off with former assistant coach and Gaucho swimmer, Victor Wales, who is now the head coach at the University of Hawaii.

The Horror, the Horror

Thursday, October 26, 2006

When it comes to genre films, nothing beats a good horror movie. Full of sex, blood, and plenty of other characteristics that make these flicks fantastic in the way that only something so widely reviled by protective parents and pro-censorship politicians everywhere can be, horror films are also often a vehicle for social commentary and scathing satire. In a tribute to the genre that taught us valuable lessons like: "only virgins are capable of outsmarting crazed killers," "nobody dies after the first time you kill them" and - most importantly - "one movie is never enough," we here at the editorial staff of Artsweek have taken time out of our Halloween preparations to compile a list of our top 10 favorite freaky flicks.

Hot Sax

Thursday, October 26, 2006

In his 76 years on earth, Sonny Rollins has played with jazz gods like Miles Davis and Thelonious Monk, overcome a heroin addiction, fled his home in New York as the World Trade Center collapsed a block away with only a saxophone in his hand and been widely acknowledged as a master of that very same instrument. Last Sunday night at Campbell Hall, it was clear that energy and persistence are two things that abound in Mr. Rollins's musical - as well as personal - life.

They Came, They Rocked, They Conquered

Thursday, October 26, 2006

The Young Turks are taking Isla Vista by storm, but not by force, as they continue to confidently conquer the hearts and ears of partygoers with a unique style of rock that utterly defies categorization. With a style that includes vocals delivered with a simplified, raw edge that is reminiscent of Brandon Boyd and guitar hooks that run the gamut from indie to punk to metal, it is easy to understand why their talent and eclecticism appeals to fans of every genre.

Thursday, October 26, 2006

What hasn't been said about Garry Trudeau?

The Magic Touch

Thursday, October 26, 2006

Magic, mayhem and mystery - these qualities alone can each make a movie interesting, but when properly combined, they make for an Oscar-worthy film. Director Christopher Nolan, of "Memento" fame, is in top form with his latest offering, "The Prestige," which is perhaps his finest work in years.

Best Served Cold

Thursday, October 26, 2006

Last Friday, rising indie darlings She Wants Revenge performed at the UCen as part of the Associated Students Program Board's fall lineup.

Oh Happy Dagger

Thursday, October 26, 2006

The Bulgarian National Theatre's production of "Romeo and Juliet" was a night of rain-soaked, romantically charged drama. This stylish modernization of the classic love story used a combination of dark comedy and dance to create a portrait of love that existed outside of the boundaries of time or gender identity.
