Residents Share Thoughts on I.V. Master Plan Options

Thursday, June 1, 2006

Approximately 30 long-term Isla Vista residents and a handful of students met in the Linda Vista room of Francisco Torres Residence Hall yesterday to discuss the recently released I.V. Master Plan's Draft Environmental Impact Report. During last night's open forum, a number of audience members voiced their opinions about the Master Plan. One of the most controversial issues discussed was a provision in one alternative of the Master Plan to significantly increase I.V.'s population. A second open forum will be held June 8 at the same location and time.

Court To Decide on Regents' Handling of Funds for Politics

Thursday, June 1, 2006

The UCSB Associated Students' lawsuit against the University of California Regents looks like it could be lost almost a year after being filed. UCSB A.S. - and later the UC Berkeley Associated Students Graduate Assembly (ASUCBGA) - filed a lawsuit against the UC Regents last October in an attempt to change the University's policy forbidding the use of student funds for campaigns supporting a political candidate or issue on a ballot.

Leaving the Nexus is Such Sweet Sorrow

Thursday, June 1, 2006

Sitting here in the Daily Nexus office, my eyes wandering - as they have for three years now - over the spectacular array of random crap covering the walls, I find myself struggling to put my thoughts into words. At least, words with some measure of humor or insightfulness. Or, failing that, just enough words to fill this enormous blank page stretching before me like a barren expanse of Arctic wilderness.

Faculty Botches Tuition

Thursday, June 1, 2006

Recently, the UCSB Faculty Legislature made a resolution, which if passed, could ultimately force university students to financially assist nonresident graduate students with their tuition. On May 11, the UCSB Faculty Legislature voted in favor of a memorial abolishing systemwide nonresident tuition fees for its graduate students in attempt to attract more qualified students and researchers.

When It Comes to the Big Decisions, If the Rainbow Show Fits, Wear It

Thursday, June 1, 2006

The sun is shining, the weather is clear and the Bob Marley references are already flowing like a nice, cold beer on a hot summer day.

Readers Should Remain Skeptical of the News They Read, Press Makes Mistake

Thursday, June 1, 2006

I was extremely disappointed after reading Elana Wenocur's column ("Iran's Wristbands Are Reminiscent of Nazi Germany," Daily Nexus, May 24, 2006).

SB Ends Season With Defeat in Cal Poly

Thursday, June 1, 2006

Even in the world of sports all good things must come to an end. The UCSB baseball team (26-28 overall, 9-12 in the Big West) dropped its first series since the beginning of May, ending the run that brought the Gauchos within a shot of third place heading into the final weekend of the season.

Three Gauchos Continue to Nationals

Thursday, June 1, 2006

The UCSB men's track team is back at sea level after competing in the NCAA Western Regional in Provo, Utah. The unfriendly combination of BYU's high heat and altitude was rough on the Gauchos, and some athletes from other low-altitude schools did not even manage to finish their events.

X-traordinarily Ordinary

Thursday, June 1, 2006

"X-Men: The Last Stand" might as well have been titled "X-Man" or better yet, "Wolverine," because this movie is basically just about Wolverine (Hugh Jackman). Although this may seem like a good thing, it is not. There could have been so much more to this movie if director Brett Ratner had decided to include some plot in it.

Don't Pass On This Cast

Thursday, June 1, 2006

Lately, there seems to be a wave of commercial Hollywood actors experimenting with independent films that generally have short, limited releases in the theaters and enjoy most of their success after they are released on DVD.

Viva La Lucha Libre

Thursday, June 1, 2006

Seeing two enormous, masked men in the dark usually signals trouble. This was far from the case when attendees at last Saturday's screening of "Santo vs. the Martian Invasion" at I.V. Theater found themselves in the presence of Mexican wrestlers Enigma de Oro and Kayam of the Los Chivos wrestling team.

Acoustic Awesomeness

In distressed jeans, tight green T-shirt, flashy sunglasses and bed-head hair, Josh Allan may seem like a typical young musician. But once he took the stage at SOhO in downtown Santa Barbara on Tuesday night, he proved that looks can be deceiving.
