Bright, blooming tulips to the opening of the new Arbor for giving students another convenient place to spend their parents' money. Shriveled, flaky turds to Menehunes for closing its doors - putting an end to four-dollar pitchers of PBR and drunken shuffleboard in one fell swoop.

I can't believe it is still happening. I thought students and working people had taken a tough enough blow when our congress and president enacted billions and billions of cuts to the fundamental programs our country depends on.

MTV kicks ass. It's like one big, blinged-out commercial. When the station isn't busy touting its own products or cross-promoting other Viacom endeavors, it's bombarding our youth with informative music videos designed to remind us that the key to a successful life is buying a bright pink Bentley, rocking 10 pounds of ice on our wrists and paying a bunch of scantily-clad, quasi-whores to gyrate on the hood of our cars while we pose for the camera.

"The Secret World of Alex Mack," Weird Al Yankovic and Ty Beanie Babies. Chances are that at least half of the people reading this found themselves nodding excitedly and thinking to themselves, "Shit! I remember that!" As for the other half, I pity you.

If I was in a rock band, I would ride onstage on a gold-plated motorcycle. Unfortunately, the members of The Academy Is... had too much integrity for this death-defying stunt. However, Artsweek did interview Academy guitarist Mike Carden, which is death-defying in and of itself.

If the "Girl from Ipanema" were alive today, she would certainly be homeless, addicted to drugs or dead. Today's Rio de Janeiro is much different than the Rio that inspired Stan Getz to write that famous song about Brazil's most famous beach. Rio is not only the world-renowned colorful destination spot; it is also the slum capital of the world.

Transport a criminal from his cell to a court appearance - simple enough, right? That's what Jack Mosley (Bruce Willis), an alcoholic and aging cop, has to do. But, with Eddie Bunker (Mos Def) in his backseat, Mosley gets much more than he bargained for.

If Interpol is the mainstream musical brain fodder of mopey art students, then She Wants Revenge's self-titled debut acts as the melodramatic junior high schooler's equivalent. This is not to say that She Wants Revenge doesn't show promise, just that their foray into self-importance tends to fall flat.

For our beloved Daily Nexus readers who have not yet heard of Mogwai, I would briefly describe them as an instrumental rock band that utilizes the versatility of the electric guitar in all of its varied forms: overdriven, grunge crunch and even slide.

The human is becoming increasingly perplexed as to why teachers constantly refer to final written documents as "papers." Sure, that is what you are turning in, "paper." But can't you just turn in 8-10 blank pages of "paper?"
