In the midst of an investigation concerning possible improper hiring practices and conflicts of interest, University of California Provost and Senior Vice President MRC Greenwood resigned last Friday, joining another UC official recently put on leave in relation to the same inquiry.

Being the opinion editor here at the Daily Nexus, I'm reminded every day that people actually do care. Sometimes I'm confounded by what people care about (say, the red curb in front of their house, the demise of reality television or even those cursed, ever-so-tropical snowy plovers), but it's reassuring to see that at least a few people give a damn.

I did not participate in the Halloween festivities this year. Instead, I flew home to be with my family, to grieve the death of my uncle. The youngest of nine siblings who should have been the last to go, ended up being the first.

Fans packed the Rec Cen II last Saturday while the UCSB roller hockey team hosted a league tournament, as they are the only team whose campus has a rink suitable for the sport.

Starting the 2005-2006 school year off on the left foot, the Santa Barbara surf team picked up right where it left off last June, to take first place in the C-Street competition held Oct. 30 after winning the 2005 National College Championship.

From start to finish, the UCSB swim teams dominated Saturday's dual meets against UCSD. The women's team beat the Tritons (0-3) 151 to 99 and the men's team handled San Diego (0-2) by a final score of 167 to 92. With the victories, the women advance to 3-2 and the men's team evens its record at 1-1.
