A 21-year-old UCSB student was killed in a fatal traffic collision Friday afternoon, marking the second time in two weeks that a motorcycle accident has claimed the life of a local student. Manuel Stahl, a senior philosophy major, died at approximately 4:10 p.m. Friday when the motorcycle he was driving drifted into the left-hand lane and crashed into the rear of a black Honda Civic, according to a California Highway Patrol press release.

Family members and friends of Terence Young, a 19-year-old UCSB student who died of heart failure on June 21, gathered for a candlelight vigil in the Fiesta room of Francisco Torres on Friday night to share kind words and memories of the energetic freshman.

While some students might find it a bit cheeky, campus coeds looking for another position to put in their resume can try out this week for a slot in Playboy Magazine's "Girls of the Top 10 Party Schools" feature. Playboy publicist Theresa Hennessey said the magazine is looking to include at least one UCSB woman in the featured section of its May 2006 issue.

Locals were anything but sour this weekend, as the Goleta Chamber of Commerce hosted its 14th annual Lemon Festival. The event, which occurred Oct. 15 and 16 in Girsh Park, commemorated Goleta's long history of lemon production, which began in the 1890s.

Yesterday I was driving on Camino Pescadero, when some crazy lady flew through a stop sign and made a left turn right in front of me. I missed her by a fraction of an inch. As I craned my head to scream at her, I caught a quick shot of her face - she was laughing. Excuse me?

I'm writing this letter in response to Friday's article in the 3300 minutes section ("Discovering the Joys of Collegiate Cooking," Daily Nexus, Oct. 14). I commend you for choosing to feature an article that highlights the importance of food and nutrition, especially when we all know that your diet is probably the first thing to be compromised when you get out on your own and you don't have anyone but yourself to make sure you are eating well.

I'd like to thank the Nexus for printing letters in the last few weeks from students with disabilities on how they are succeeding at UCSB. As a student with both visible and invisible disabilities, I know it is sometimes a great challenge to openly face a disability, let alone succeed in college with one.

I decided to go to the College Republicans' presentation of Ben Stein. He started his speech with a few jokes belittling Bush's intelligence, made some references to hashish and even threw in something about a priest and a rabbi. Never mind the nonthreatening demeanor.

My congratulations to the UCSB chapter of the College Republicans for spending some $15,000 to bring GOP comedian Ben Stein to campus ("Ben Stein To Speak About Recruiters at UCSB," Daily Nexus, Oct. 13). To some, that might seem like an awful lot of money to spend on bringing to our area a man who is, at best, a mildly amusing character actor. But what do I know?
Men's Soccer

The #15 UCSB men's soccer team regained its spot on top of the Big West standings with a tie and a win in back-to-back contests this weekend. For the second time in two seasons, the Gauchos (7-2-3 overall, 3-0-2 in the Big West) forced a tie with Irvine.
Women's Soccer

A lackluster first half performance against #24 Fullerton set the tone for a long Sunday afternoon for the UCSB women's soccer team. The visiting Titans (12-3 overall, 4-1 in the Big West) outshot Santa Barbara 22-7 on their way to a 2-0 victory.
Women's Volleyball

For the UCSB women's volleyball team, there is certainly more than one kind of wave to ride in Santa Barbara. With two wins this weekend, the Gauchos (10-7 overall, 6-1 in the Big West) have now won their past 11 games in the Thunderdome and are currently riding a six-game conference win streak.

The foreign waters of northern California proved too cold for the #15 UCSB men's water polo team who lost to St. Francis N.Y. 10-9 and placed 13th in the NorCal Open at Cal over the weekend.

You know what's fun? Eating-out jokes. For example, this weekend I ate-out at Anna's "Bakery," Sam's (To-Go), Woody's, Jack(s) (in the) Box, Javan's, Gio's and Gina's.
