Tuesday, April 12, 2005

Police arrested one man and detained one woman Monday afternoon following a high-speed car chase through the streets of Isla Vista and the UCSB campus. The pursuit ended when the fleeing green Honda Civic Hatchback blew all four of its tires after hitting a curb outside Manzanita Village.

Tuesday, April 12, 2005

Rick Perry, 46, a construction worker from Atascadero, spread his hands wide to impress upon his audience the monstrous size of the fish and continued with his tale of woe, making animated gestures as he narrated.

Surfrider, Students Disagree Over Parking Plan Revision

Tuesday, April 12, 2005

In its meeting Wednesday morning, the California Coastal Commission (CCC) will determine the fate of free on-street parking in Isla Vista. Following an appeal filed by the Santa Barbara chapter of the Surfrider Foundation in December 2004, the CCC has revised the Santa Barbara County planning agency's proposal for a parking permit plan in I.V. to increase the amount of free coastal access that would be available once the plan is implemented.

A.S. Election Endorsements: A.S. President

Tuesday, April 12, 2005

And then there were... none. The Nexus editorial board did not reach a consensus on its endorsement for A.S. president. Though Bill Shiebler brings his valuable experience as A.S. Finance Board chair and a good deal of competence to the table, we could not get past the fact that his agenda includes two major proposals we are quick to strongly oppose: a queer general education requirement and a Finance Board lock-in fee.

A.S. Election Endorsements: Internal Vice President

Tuesday, April 12, 2005

Adam Graff once wrote an opinion column claiming the "honeymoon" between him and the Nexus was over. Oh Adam, we never stopped loving you. You're even cuter when you're mad. Passionate, articulate and with a knowledge of A.S. and campus issues that blows every other candidate for every other office out of the water, Graff embodies every quality a student politician should.

Tuesday, April 12, 2005

From living in a Del Playa Drive apartment condemned for eviction to serving as a voting director on the Isla Vista Park and Recreation District, Kelly Burns is intimately involved in local affairs.

A.S. Election Endorsements: External Vice President, Statewide Affairs

Tuesday, April 12, 2005

Last year, Felicia Cruz told us she would take the train up to Sacramento, Calif. to save on A.S. travel expenses while representing UCSB students in statewide affairs. True to her word - and the Nexus editors are suckers for the whole integrity thing - Cruz hopped on the Amtrak three times this past year, sacrificing her time for a longer ride to stretch student fees a little further.

A.S. Fee Initiatives

Tuesday, April 12, 2005

In theory, the A.S. Student Lobby initiative is a great idea. You know, giving students a voice and all that jazz. In reality, however, the group does not have enough power to make a significant difference on the state level, and definitely not enough power to warrant all students paying an extra 69 cents per quarter.

The UCSB women's lacrosse team took the penultimate step toward an undefeated season Sunday, beating UCLA 10-7 at the Pit. Sophomore Brooke Julicher scored three goals, and sophomore Shanna Mota added two goals and an assist to pace UCSB as the Gauchos ran their record to 14-0 with one game remaining.

SURRENDER DOROTHY

Tuesday, April 12, 2005

Look! In the sky! It’s a plane! It’s a plane pulling along an ad for thedarksideofucsb.com! It flew over my house in I.V. early Saturday afternoon, when most of us were still inside sleeping in or recovering from our hangovers.
