Last week we learned that some members of the Academic Senate have launched a crusade to ban the ROTC from campus. The crusade is being led by Charles Bazerman, chair of the Dept. of Education, and Thomas Scheff, a retired sociology professor who has written a book entitled Being Mentally Ill: A Sociological Theory. The effort is not only wrong, but sickly hypocritical.

The man who, fueled by a heroic intake of substances and a manic passion for action verbs, opened the floodgates for "gonzo journalism" - the art and science of hybridizing both epic fact and epic fiction into one's reporting - is gone.

The UCSB women's water polo team played two conference games this weekend and came away with two very different results. The #10 Gauchos (4-3 overall, 1-2 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation) got their first home win of the season Saturday, defeating #7 San Diego State (2-4 overall, 0-2 in the MPSF) 7-2 at Campus Pool.

It was a series full of firsts for UCSB baseball this weekend at Fresno. UCSB won the series by taking games one and two, a first in 2005. Junior starters Steve Morlock and Michael Martin both picked up their first wins of 2005 and amazingly, despite all the bad weather reports, the Gauchos had no games delayed because of rain or darkness.

In its season opener, the UCSB track team pulled off men's and women's victories in a tri-meet with Claremont-Mudd-Scripps and Westmont. "It was our first meet of the year and it was in the rain," junior sprinter Kylie McCuen said. "You never know what to expect, but we worked through it and did extremely well."

One holiday weekend, a little rain and two losses left the UCSB men's tennis team full of disappointment. The Gauchos missed an opportunity to get back in the win column as Saturday's match against Davis was rained out. UCSB (2-8 overall) came into the match with six straight losses, five against nationally-ranked teams.


Softball Tournament Battles Rain

Rain cancelled all but two games in this weekend's Commercial Capital Invitational Softball Tournament at Campus Diamond. After Thursday's tournament opener against BYU was rained out, the Gauchos (6-6 overall) defeated Southwest Missouri State University 3-0 on Friday afternoon.
