If Goleta Beach has been looking a little smaller lately, Santa Barbara County has been working hard to fatten it up. On Thursday night, a committee of citizens and local government officials met in the administrative building of the Santa Barbara Airport to develop questions for a panel of scientific and technical experts.

Massive earth moving and development at Santa Barbara's Sheffield Reservoir has proceeded into the new year as the city continues construction on two underground holding tanks, capable of holding 6.5 million gallons of water each.

Buddhist art can be more than a Steven Seagal film, as shown in an exhibition currently showcased at the UCSB Art Museum. The "Insights: Buddhist Perspectives in Contemporary Art" exhibition, which opened in November, features work by artists whose pieces have been influenced by Buddhist ideas.

The Gauchos need a New Year's resolution fast. The UCSB men's basketball team squandered a late six-point second-half lead against Utah State on Thursday night in the Thunderdome, dropping the game 74-67 and falling to one for two in the Big West standings.

Entering Thursday's game against Santa Barbara, Utah State hoped they would mount a competitive effort against the eight consecutive Big West champs. Their mission failed. The UCSB women's basketball team dominated the Aggies throughout much of the night and defeated Utah State 86-51 at the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum.

Seven Mountain Pacific Sports Federation men's volleyball teams will travel to Santa Barbara this weekend to compete in the eight-team 40th annual UCSB/Elephant Bar Collegiate Invitational, hosted by UCSB tonight and on Saturday.
