Statewide budget cuts forced Santa Barbara County Superior Court employees to take a mandatory, unpaid day off Monday, Nov. 10. The forced leave of absence was one of a total of 13 days that local court employees will not receive pay.

Halloween in Isla Vista: The party is over. Seriously, this time. It was 15 days ago. But that only brings next year's festivities 15 days closer. Planning can never start too early. Do cops have quotas? Do they get a bonus for writing a bunch of tickets? No, there's no free toaster for every five beer tickets we write. People often talk of quotas and how the police need to show a certain number of busts every shift, but actually it's illegal for a police department to require a certain amount of arrests (California Vehicle Code 41602) by an officer.

Tomorrow, UCSB ventures to Irvine to take on the Anteaters for not quite all the marbles, but a considerable share of them. While the playoffs loom next week, at stake tomorrow is a possible first round bye in the NCAA playoffs, and possibly the Big West title.

On Saturday, the Gauchos will travel to Portland, Ore. to compete in the West Regional Championship. The race will take place at Blue Lake Park, with a 10K race scheduled at 11 a.m. for the men and a 6K event at 12:15 p.m. for the women.
