UC Survival Requires Honest Plan for Future

Thursday, October 22, 2009

University of California President Mark Yudof's open letter to students was condescending and full of useless platitudes and vague promises. The only message that came across clearly was that the chain of command is shafting students. We know that already.

Thursday, October 22, 2009

We thought we'd share some tips about how to protect your stuff, or at least get compensation when it is stolen or damaged, whether due to theft, rain, fire or another unexpected disaster.

Women's Soccer

UCSB Looks Northward

Thursday, October 22, 2009

Coming off a disappointing 3-2 double-overtime loss to Seattle University last weekend, the UCSB women's soccer team resumes conference play this weekend on the road against UC Davis and Pacific, ending a four-game homestand at Harder Stadium. Last year, the Gauchos (7-8-1 overall, 4-1 in Big West) came away with a 2-0 win at Davis (6-7-1, 1-4) but could only manage a draw with the Tigers (9-4-2, 3-1) at home.

Men's Water Polo

Beach Battle Looms for SB

Thursday, October 22, 2009

The #9 UCSB men's water polo team will travel down to Long Beach State to play the #8 49ers this weekend for their first Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Conference game of the season. Santa Barbara (9-7 overall) is coming off two disappointing weekends in a row, having gone 1-4 in their last five contests, with three of the four losses being decided by two goals or less. And if that was not enough motivation for the Gauchos, one of those losses was against Long Beach (6-8 overall, 0-3 in conference).

Foxy Sounds at the Hub

Thursday, October 22, 2009

The line formed early for The Sounds' Monday-night gig at the Hub, which was a fortunate thing, because the real show was over by the time the headliners even took the stage.

"Gunmetal" Brings Noir to Sunny SB

Thursday, October 22, 2009

Picture a bar by an airport, just a little hole in the wall that people stop into when they're running away. It's the kind of place that "smells like stale cigarette smoke and shattered dreams." The only thing anyone drinks there is bourbon or gin, and the Piano Man plays the blues.

Twins Achieve Sainthood ****

Thursday, October 22, 2009

Canadian twins Tegan and Sara have the world at their fingertips: After winning a local music contest at the age of 17, they landed a spot on a "Grey's Anatomy" soundtrack, gained a devoted following of fans and even won the respect of critics along the way.

It's a Wild, "Wild" World Out There *****

Thursday, October 22, 2009

"Where the Wild Things Are" has achieved a rare quadruple-media self-referential storm that has taken the beloved children's book from its place at the bottom of boxes in attics and elevated it to a multimedia cultural force to be reckoned with. Not bad for a book that took two years to be recognized for its popularity, a book that consists of a grand total of 10 sentences that leave as much to the imagination as they suggest] Thus far this year, the original picture book has been adapted into a novel, a documentary, a movie and a soundtrack, all of which encapsulate the original work in their own related but distinct ways.

The "Paranormal" Phenomenon ****

Thursday, October 22, 2009

It only took one million online demands for the independently produced "Paranormal Activity" to be distributed to theaters nationwide, but it has finally arrived. And boy was it worth it.

OFF THE BEATEN PATH: [REC]

Thursday, October 22, 2009

1968's "Rosemary's Baby" featured a shot of a woman sitting in a bedroom on the phone with her face blocked by the edge of the doorway. Legend has it that at the first screening, nearly the entire audience leaned forward and to the right, trying to see around the corner. Forty years later, this type of visual gimmickry has become a subgenre unto itself.

The University Art Museum Takes a Holiday

Thursday, October 22, 2009

The University Art Museum opened its doors to four new exhibitions last Wednesday, all of which will be showing through Jan. 31, 2010. The distinct and diverse exhibitions deal with enticing themes, all confronting larger discourses in art in general, that on a more microcosmic level are sure to automatically incite interest in anyone, art lover or not.

New "Stepfather" Is No Replacement *

Thursday, October 22, 2009

From the brilliant minds that brought us 2008's "brilliant" remake of "Prom Night" comes another 1980s horror-film retread that should have gone straight to DVD. Nelson McCormack's update of "The Stepfather" lacks the original film's creativity and satirical tone, and that's just the tip of the iceberg. While this new "Stepfather" is ostensibly a tale about the disconnect and tension between stepfather and stepfamily, the bigger conflict arises between the film's interesting premise and its completely dull, illogical, lifeless execution.

"Citizen" Abides the Law of Action Entertainment

Thursday, October 22, 2009

Earlier this summer, Gerald Butler demonstrated how he does in fact has some range as an actor by playing a crudely endearing nice guy/asshole that pursues the chick from "Knocked Up" (I know her name, but I choose not to say it) in the forgettable romantic comedy "The Ugly Truth." But, realizing nobody cares about semi-raunchy R-rated chick flicks, Butler (literally) busts out his six pack as he returns to his gore-filled action roots in "Law Abiding Citizen."

Ghostface Killah's Spectre Haunts Velvet Jones

Thursday, October 22, 2009

Fresh off an appearance at VH1's Hip Hop Honors, founding Wu-Tang Clansman Ghostface Killah made a shambolic appearance at Velvet Jones last Saturday night. Apparently battling some sort of flu, Ghost basically turned his show over to Cappadonna and other members of Theodore Unit, as they worked their way through a couple solo numbers and a few Wu-Tang classics, including a bizarre "cover" of "Shimmy Shimmy Ya" that featured the audience rapping ODB's entire verse while Ghost and Cappadonna looked on approvingly.

Thao Nguyen with the Get Down Stay Down at SOhO

Thursday, October 22, 2009

Last Thursday, SOhO was graced with the presence of Kill Rock Stars artist Thao Nguyen and her backing back, the Get Down Stay Down. Though the Virginia-based band's only been around for the past three years, it has gathered quite a following. The band kicked off its newest tour, behind its latest album, We Brave Bee Stings, here in Santa Barbara, and it was an evening to remember.

To Sleep or Pass Midterms? That Is the Question...

Thursday, October 22, 2009

Midterms have a way of sneaking up on me that makes me want to throw myself off the DP cliffs and land on a bicycle spoke.
