Seeing as I have been here for the past month, I have come to find a pizza stand where I can buy a slice, as large as half a Domino's pizza, that is only 3 euro; I can openly drink a beer in the streets without having to worry about a cop coming up to me on a horse and asking, "What is that in your hand, young lady?"; and that people will not judge you if they see you eating a gelato at 9 a.m. (well, at least not openly). Among all these great discoveries, I could sense that something was still missing in this new place I call home: the beach.

Unintentional voyeurism happens all the time in our little beachside community. I can personally attest to an impressively long and varied list of what I consider research and what authority figures consider "voyeurism." UCSB Athletics has a bit of a tradition when it comes to dominating the Big West. The Gauchos have won all but two Commissioner's Cups (given to the highest performing school across all sports) this millennium, and this year the teams are looking better than ever. With that success has come various rivalries over the years, from an Irvine curse in men's basketball to some Riverside bad blood on the women's side of the court. Northridge has always given the men's soccer team fits, and Long Beach State has put the pressure on the women's footie squad lately. But the one team that has consistently provided big matches across the board -- bringing the fans out no matter the time or place -- is Cal Poly. With this in mind, the UCSB and Cal Poly Athletic Depts. have announced the introduction of the Blue-Green Rivalry, making the passion and excitement the schools share official.

The crying shame about most American beaches is that they are damn cold when the sun goes down. We all love to frolic in the salty goodness and sandy stretches that beaches provide, sometimes without clothes and sometimes with board shorts and a surfboard to keep us gliding ecstatically through that blue wonderland. What Americans are missing out on, however, is the feeling of partying on a beach at night and sweating from the humid heat that never subsides in a tropical paradise. My cohorts and I spent last weekend at one of these majestic locales, because when the sun goes down, the subwoofers come out, and you are suddenly at a moonlit disco.
