UCSB will compete against a familiar opponent this weekend when the team travels north to San Luis Obispo for a duel meet against Cal Poly. The first meet between these two teams was held at Campus Pool in November when the UCSB men beat the Mustangs 155-141, and the women won with a score of 157-141.
It was both a joyous celebration and a sad goodbye for the women’s swimming and diving team this weekend, as three seniors helped beat UC Davis and University of the Pacific in what was the final home meet of the season for UCSB and the last of their individual collegiate careers.
The first home meet of 2011 is also the last of the season for UCSB men and women’s swimming and diving, and will once again have UCSB race against a high level of competition. Last year’s Big West Conference champion UC Davis as well as the Pacific swimming and diving team comes to Campus Pool this Saturday for dual meets against the Gauchos.
Competing away from home is tough for any team, especially when traveling seven hours away on the road and more than 2,000 feet up in elevation. These factors were apparent during UCSB’s meet in Las Vegas, as both the men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams fell in meets against UNLV.
The UCSB men and women’s swim and dive teams are looking to find their first victory of the New Year this weekend in an away meet against rival UNLV.
The UCSB men and women’s swimming and diving teams each suffered losses this past weekend during separate meets at USC and UCLA. The Gaucho men’s swim team lost its doubleheader against the ninth-ranked Trojans 140-44 and 136-47.
Even without half of its squad, the UCSB men and women’s swimming and diving team still celebrated the New Year with a win against West Virginia at Campus Pool this past Friday.
Juniors Kevin Ferguson and Chris Peterson posted career-best times in the 100-meter freestyle this weekend as the men’s swimming and diving team finished the Long Beach invitational meet in sixth place.
Eleven years is enough time for something to go missing and be gone forever, but for the UCSB swimming and diving program, that missing element has finally been found. Both the men’s and women’s teams recently expanded to include a diving program, giving full meaning to their “swimming and diving” titles.

UC San Diego was no match for UCSB swimming and diving in its first home meet of the season, as both the men’s and women’s programs were victorious in the non-conference meet.
The UCSB women’s swim team dove into the pool for practice Monday after coming off a successful weekend meet at UCLA, where the squad beat Oregon State 192-190 before losing to UCLA 156-98.
After winning 26 of the last 34 Big West swimming titles, the UCSB men’s swimming team has joined the Pac-10 — a conference dominated by major athletic programs such as USC, UCLA and Stanford — for the 2010-11 season.
