One team pounded it into the paint. The other settled for outside shots and got burned. On a night where Weber State shot 7-for-38 from three-point land, the UC Santa Barbara men's basketball team came out with a huge 66-57 nonconference win over the reigning Big Sky Champions.

It doesn't hurt to be deep. It also doesn't hurt to double up your opponent in second half scoring. On Saturday, the Gauchos had both of these ingredients working for them in a season-opening 85-57 blowout of Cal State Los Angeles. Playing without two of their marquee players, junior point guard Justin Joyner (ankle) and sophomore small forward James Nunnally (time-related issue), UCSB still managed to suit up 12 bodies and have four players finish in double figures.

Long before the team can eye the ultimate prize, UCSB must first prove itself over beatable opponents, the first of whom will be Cal State Los Angeles. The Division II Golden Eagles will tip-off with Santa Barbara at the Thunderdome this Saturday at 3 p.m. as the Gauchos attempt to begin their regular season with a win. Though they have yet to play in an official contest, UCSB is coming off a 101-64 exhibition blowout of Sonoma State last weekend.

It was a hell of a run, but it couldn't make it all the way. On March 13, the UCSB men's basketball team fell to Big West Champion Cal State Northridge 67-60 in the semifinal match of the conference tournament. The loss ended an impressive second half of the season by the Gauchos, who pulled themselves out of the very bottom of the Big West to finish fourth in the season and beat Fullerton 73-64 in the tournament quarterfinals.
