Back in the Fall of 2007, when the UCSB women's soccer team was absolutely loaded on defense but, due to injuries and graduation, was barren on offense, true freshman walk-on Kailyn Kugler took center stage. Now after completion of a junior year that saw her named Big West Offensive Player of the Year, Kugler is showing no signs of leaving it.

On a cold November night in Palo Alto, the UCSB women's soccer team saw their season end in the NCAA Tournament's first round with a disappointing 2-0 loss... again. While the defending Big West Tournament Champion Gauchos (9-10-3 overall) put in a spirited first 10 minutes, a quick start that had been lacking in previous contests, an own goal in the 12th seemed to take away the road team's confidence and opened the floodgates for BYU's (18-3-2) offense to add another score 27 minutes later.

It was painful. It was stunning. It was tense and frustrating at times to watch, but for the UCSB women's soccer team, it was also their biggest win of the season, as the #3 seeded Gauchos upset #1 seeded Cal Poly 1-1 (5-4) in penalty kicks Sunday afternoon. For the second straight year, Santa Barbara has earned not only the Big West Tournament crown but the automatic NCAA bid that comes with it.

With seven minutes left in regulation, sophomore forward Katy Roby's goal -- which put #3 seeded UCSB up 2-0 -- seemed like the icing on the cake. Thirty seconds later, it became all too necessary. Junior forward Farryn Townley finally got the better of junior keeper Tammy Lenham with a quick strike from point blank range to cut the deficit back to one, but ultimately #2 seeded Cal State Northridge couldn't muster an equalizer and thus fell again to the visiting Gauchos, this time 2-1 in yesterday's Big West Tournament Semifinal at Matador Field. With the win, Santa Barbara advances to the conference final at Cal Poly, with an auto-NCAA Tournament bid on the line.
