SB Student Rages at Bethpage

Every college athlete dreams of the opportunity to play with the pros, but very few actually get the opportunity. For Scott Lewis, a sophomore walk-on to the UCSB golf team, the dream became a reality this past weekend when he got his first taste of the pros at the U.S. Open.

Berlin Homeless Inspire American-Style Altruism

As a student studying in Berlin for the year, I’m fighting that tired stereotype Europeans hold of the United States of America: that Americans are heartless and lack compassion.

Natural Selection

So how bout them skateboard paths, eh? Pretty neat. Also, they’re just in time for the summer newbie rush. Gauchos Gone Pro

Evan Patak — Volleyball
The former First Team All-American is now an integral part of the U.S. national team, and is sixth among all scorers in the World League.

Chris Pontius and Eric Avila — Soccer
Two members of UCSB’s 2006 National Champion squad are now thriving at the next level. Pontius is a serious contender for MLS Rookie of the Year, while Avila recently scored his first ever professional goal — a beautiful curving effort that was nominated for MLS Goal of the Week.

Michael Young, Ryan Spilborghs and Skip Schumaker — Baseball
Schumaker currently starts for the St. Louis Cardinals as their everyday leadoff hitter after a move to second base this season. Spilborghs continues to fight for playing time in a platoon with five talented Colorado Rockies outfielders. Young easily boasts the most impressive resume of the trio, as the five-time All-Star continues to get it done as he plays out his six-year, $80 million contract with the Rangers.

UC Officials Call for Cuts
